The club which produced the 1996 Olympian, Francis Barrett, has come together with Galway's other boxing club to secure the city's first purpose-built £340,000 gymnasium.

The lack of facilities for clubs in the city was highlighted when Barrett had to prepare for the Atlanta Games in a disused truck container.

Facilities at the new gymnasium at Westside will be provided free by Galway Corporation.
