THIRTY three schools have been selected for intensive support under the urban phase of the Department of Education's initiative, "Breaking the Cycle of Educational Disadvantage".
The schools selected are from among 190 applicants. They will qualify for extra teaching staff to ensure that all infants, first and second classes have" no more than 15 pupils, special grant assistance for purchasing books, teaching material and equipment targeted in career development to support teaching staff and a special enhanced capitation rate of £75 per, pupil. The initiative follows research conducted by the Combat Poverty Agency and the Education Research Centre, Drumcondra, Dublin.
The Minister for Education, Ms Breathnach, said she would be announcing the names of schools selected to participate in a complementary phase of the programme in early September. This phase will target schools with fewer than five teachers and schools in rural areas which serve dispersed areas.
This second phase will target about 100 schools, each of which will receive a package of financial supports. They will also be served by a co ordinator who will work with families and teachers in the selected area to combat the effects of educational disadvantage.
The schools selected under the urban phase are Rutland Street National School, Seville Place Junior Boys, North Wall Seville Place Senior Boys, North Wall Seville Place Junior Girls, North Wall Gardiner Street NS Central Model Junior, Marlboro Street Central Model Senior, Marlboro Street St Catherine's NS, School Street St Audeon's NS, Cook Street Knockmore Junior NS, Tallaght Knockmore Junior NS, Tallaght Knockmore Senior NS, Tallaght St Vincent's Girls NS, North William Street St Vincent's infants Boys, North William Street Scoil Ui Chonaill, North Richmond Street Scoil Muire/iosaf, St Mary's Place Pla's Mhuire NS, Tallaght Jobstown Junior NS, Tallaght Jobstown Senior NS, Tallaght Balcurris Junior NS, Ballymun Balcurris Senior NS, Ballymun Scoil Treasa Naofa, Donore Avenue Darndale Junior NS Darndale Senior NS George's Hill NS North Brunswick Street CBS (all Dublin).
