A bus crashed into a building in western Iran today, killing at least 28 people on their way to visit religious shrines in Iraq, and injuring nine, state radio quoted a local police official as saying.

The passenger bus, which police said had been travelling at a high speed and had mechanical problems, crashed into a building beside a road in Ilam province bordering Iraq, the report said.

"The passengers were on their way to Iraq to visit holy shrines. The injured people have been hospitalised," the police official said.

Iran has one of the highest traffic accident death tolls in the world. More than 26,000 people were killed in accidents in the year to March 2005, the most recent period for which figures were available.
