An 18-year-old man who was shot at point blank range yards from his Dublin home died from his injuries in hospital today.

The man was gunned down in the early hours of yesterday in what gardaí believe was a result of a gangland drugs war.

He was found lying in a pool of blood by neighbours in Drimnagh, in Dublin, after being shot in the head.

Gardaí believe the gunman may have called out his target's name to attract his attention before shooting him in the forehead.

Gardaí and paramedics were called to the scene of the shooting, at Cooley Road.

The injured man, who has not yet been named, was taken to St James's Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. A bullet was lodged in his brain.

He died in intensive care at 3.30pm, a garda spokesman said.

Three men in their 20s remain in custody tonight in connection with the shooting after being arrested yesterday in Inchicore.

Two of the men were being held at Sundrive Garda Station and the other in Crumlin Garda Station under the Offences Against the State Act.

They can be held until Friday evening before being charged, released or having their detention extended.

Garda sources said the shooting was related to a feud between two gangs vying for control of the south Dublin drugs trade.

The attack was also thought to involve allegations that a member of one of the gangs had informed on the other.
