Mountain safety

IF YOU’VE always wanted to explore the mountains properly but lack the skills, then consider a mountain safety workshop being run by Outdoors Ireland from November 19th to 21st.

Three one-day workshops will take place in the Wicklow Mountains near Glendalough. All levels will be catered for, from beginners to experienced walkers, together with experienced and fun mountaineering instructors.

The one-day workshop, from 10am to 5pm, gives a crash course in map reading, compass bearings, navigation techniques, advice on equipment and avoiding hypothermia.

Hiking boots can be provided, so all you need is waterproofs, a map, compass, and a sense of humour, says organiser Nathan Kingerlee. Cost: €25pp. Tel: 086-8604563.

New ferry service

Celtic Link Ferries will be the only ferry operator travelling between Ireland and France in January 2011. It will operate a route three days a week to Cherbourg and three days back to Rosslare. See celticlinkferries.com.
