Despite its vibrant South American community, Brazilian cuisine remains little known in Dublin. Speaking at the opening this week of Sabor Brazil, a new restaurant and coffee house, chef Salvador Rocha Junior said that he hoped to become “an ambassador for Brazilian cooking in Ireland”. With patterned, purple wallpaper and distinctive artwork, Sabor Brazil differs from previous efforts to introduce Brazilian food to Dublin.
The menu reflects Brazilians’ partiality to beans and rice, with dishes such as churrasquinho, feijoada and pastel, from the north, south and middle of the country. Meat is bought locally, but all other ingredients are imported to preserve authentic flavours. Feijoada, a stew made with beef, pork and beans, is apparently the dish for which expats pine the most. Sabor Brazil is at 50 Pleasants Street, Dublin 8. Tel: 01-4750304.
