The National Women’s Council will celebrate the 100th International Women’s Day on March 8th from morning till night – a day to banish gloom and believe in the power of women to change the world!
The day will begin with the launch of a Charter for Women’s Equality at European Union House on Dublin’s Dawson Street at 10am. At noon, the action moves to the National Library of Ireland where curator Catherine Morris will give a tour of the Alice Milligan collection (see above) and an array of brilliant women will reflect on women, work, history, imagination, freedom, and change – among other things – in response to photographs from the NLI collection.
Speakers will include archivist Caitriona Crowe, artists Alice Maher, theatre director Lynne Parker, historian Jane Ohlmeyer, chairperson of the NWCI Clare Treacey, the French ambassador Emmanuelle D’Achon, and Ticket editor Anthea McTeirnan. At 3pm, chief executive of the NWCI, Susan McKay, will speak at the launch of a global campaign for the rights of domestic workers organised by NWCI along with the Migrant Rights’ Centre of Ireland at Dublin City Council on Wood Quay.
Finally, there’s the Feminists’ Night Out at the Sugar Club on Leeson Street with the best of Irish women comedians. Tickets are €10 or €5 unwaged, and all proceeds go to help build a women’s refuge in Leitrim. See nwci.ie for further details.
