Is fitting cruise control really worthwhile?

HELPDESK:Answering all your motoring queries

From Tom, Dublin: I’m in the market for a new four-door hatchback that’s energy efficient and with low emissions. I don’t think the budget would stretch to a hybrid. What models would you recommend? We have a budget of about €15,000 but we could stretch to €20,000. We have a Nissan Micra which could be used in a scrappage deal.

There’s a surprising number of cars that might fit the bill, particularly when you include the scrappage deal and the various other discounts on offer.

Of the many cars that meet your needs, I would recommend a handful to test drive. All fall into the lowest tax band.

For a start, Renault, the brand that has made the most of the scrappage scheme, offers a Megane 1.5 dCi 110 Dynamique with 114g/km for €17,400. Another French model worth testing is the new C4, a very smart looking car that’s €17,235 for the 1.6HDi 90 VTR diesel courtesy of the various discounts and scrappage offer.

I’d also direct you to the likes of the Mazda3, which has a 1.6-litre diesel engine that puts out 117g/km. I’m also a big fan of the Seat Leon, with its 1.6-litre diesel that manages 105bhp, which is powerful and great looking. Finally, there’s the VW Polo. It might seem like a smaller car, but the recently launched Polo is actually as big as the earlier Golf versions, so it works perfectly fine for family motoring and it’s a solid and smart performer.

Is cruise control worthwhile? I’ve been offered it as part of an upgrade pack. I’m only really interested in getting the parking sensors and the Bluetooth phone connection but it’s included in the pack and they won’t break it up to let me choose just the things I want.

I think you will find that if the car is being ordered from the factory then they will fit the extras you want but at a less competitive price. They might complain but no dealer wants to lose a sale over an optional extra.

Even if they absolutely refuse, both Bluetooth and parking sensor devices can be bought in good motor factor stores afterwards.

Cruise control is a worthwhile addition for motorway driving in light traffic. It doesn’t make a big difference in town, unless you have adaptive cruise. Also, you have to consider any future buyer of the car later in its life: they may appreciate the feature. If you can afford it I would take the package. It’s not a frivolous waste of cash.
