Wanted: best new Irish bands

The annual IMRO Showcase Tour, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in September, is inviting acts interested in participating to apply to showcase@imro.ie before July 31st.

The tour gives up-and- coming Irish acts the opportunity to play at the gig nearest their hometown, on a well-publicised bill that they may not have the financial mean to organise otherwise. Past luminaries who have gone on to find international success include Fight Like Apes (below) and Declan O’Rourke.

For the first time in its history, an all-day gig will end the tour at Dublin’s Workman’s Club rather than the “best of” evening gig that usually closes proceedings. There will also be seminars, workshops and all-ages gigs taking place on the day.

IMRO spokesman Keith Johnson emphasised the importance of the tour for both young bands and music fans who may see the next big thing play in a small venue in their town or city.

“It’s not a competition, and it never has been; it’s purely about showcasing the very best of new Irish music,” he said. “Last year we had the cream of the crop, but there are still quite a number of potentially big acts bubbling under. Hopefully we can shine a light on those acts early on.” See imro.ie
