THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES ****

Directed by Walter Salles. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Rodrigo de la Serna, Mia Maestro 15 cert

This illuminating, deeply involving and factually based film is set in 1952 as Che Guevera (Bernal), then a 23-yearold medical student, travels through Latin America with his best friend. In the tradition of the classically shaped road movie, this proves to be a journey of self-discovery for the idealistic young Guevera. MD

WIMBLEDON **

Directed by Richard Loncraine. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Paul Bettany, Sam Neill, James McAvoy, John Favreau, Bernard Hill 12 cert.

16 YEARS OF ALCOHOL ****

Directed by Richard Jobson. Starring Kevin McKidd, Laura Fraser, Susan Lynch, Ewan Bremner 18 cert

Jobson’s semi-autobiographical first feature charts three turbulent decades in the life of an Edinburgh street fighting man who’s on a rocky road to possible redemption when his past catches up with him. MD

METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER ****

Directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky 15 cert

This terrifically sly documentary, in which the notorious heavy metal band spend hours talking rubbish to their oddly pullovered therapist, should have thrown its subjects into a blind rage. The commentaries on the two-disc edition suggest that the boys still have little idea quite how ridiculous they appear. DC

RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE *

Directed by Alexander Witt. Starring Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Jared Harris, Oded Fehr, Thomas Kretschmann, Sophie Vavasseur 15 cert

This terrible zombie shocker, the second inspired by a famously brutal video game, deserves some praise for its sheer, unforgiving relentlessness. DC
