Strike a pose

As the countdown to the party season starts, it's time to stop worrying about the shortage of champagne, and start thinking about the run on camera film and the demand for party frocks. The two most important things to remember are that the millennium will try and up-stage you at every turn, and that those party snaps are going to be hanging around for a hell of a long time. For once, it's actually worth putting a bit of thought into your frock, not least because it means you can concentrate on the serious business of enjoying yourself on the night itself.

Black has been given its marching orders this season, giving way to colour's vibrant coup d'etat. Futuristic silver is particularly popular, as are leafy green and pink, be it bubble-gum pink, payslip pink or the deep tones of fine, old claret. Alternatively, make a statement in brisk primary brights or glistening white - red stops more than traffic, blue means you don't have to be, and white is either virginal or ice queen, take your pick.

It's your party, so you should opt for whatever shape suits you best - if you like your skirts big, long and indebted to the meringue, team one up with a slim, sparkly top. The slip dress is still hanging in there because it's so darned sexy; skirts are usually to the knee, and if in doubt, add a little cardigan or even, gasp, a much maligned pashmina.

Heels as high as the Himalayas are every party girl's secret weapon and there are enough strappy sandals and knee-high boots in the shops to conquer the world. But remember, dancing the night away is also part of the chic chick's armoury so bring your trainers or a pair of comfy old flats tucked inside that oh-so-dainty silk bag. Finally, know that it's all in the detail - sew on a sequin, fluff up your feathers, and brush up on your beading. Add a cowboy hat, if the mood takes you. Or a pair of wellingtons. Or whatever takes your fancy - just whatever you do, remember to look at the camera and smile.
