RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta's An Taobh Tuathail, one of Ireland's most lauded underground radio shows, is celebrating its 10th birthday today. The show, which has been presented by Cian Ó Ciobháin since 1999, will mark the anniversary by hosting a free gig in Galway, where the RnaG studios are based. Choice Music Prize- nominated band Halfset, ambient duo Tiny Magnetic Pets and local band The Lost Chord will play the Róisín Dubh, and the gig will also be broadcast live on the station.
An Taobh Tuathail, which translates as The Other Side, has established a loyal fanbase in Ireland and abroad during its tenure. Ó Ciobháin has forged a reputation as an eclectic DJ over the past decade and plays a diverse mix of music from 11pm to 1am, Mondays to Fridays.
"I'm as surprised as anyone that 10 years have passed," he told The Ticket. "I think that many people are weary of the way radio has become straitjacketed by playlists, the same songs appearing every hour, interspersed by inane chit- chat. On ATT, there are no playlists. I have free rein to play what I think is worth hearing."
A third An Taobh Tuathailcompilation is due for release on Psychonavigation Records this summer, and will include a new track by Circlesquare (featuring Mike Smalle, formerly of Cane 141) and, we're promised, "an oldie from Animal Collective".
