The deft, quasi-scientific, retro-themed drawings and watercolours that made up Eoin Mc Hugh’s graduation show at the NCAD in 2005 attracted a great deal of favourable attention, and he’s been in demand ever since – a gratifying position for a young artist to be in.

All Cognition is Recollection is McHugh’s first solo show at the Kerlin Gallery. While he remains best known as a draughtsman and watercolourist, he has produced other forms of work, including installation, and he takes this opportunity to show some new oil paintings.

McHugh is concerned with the psychology of perception and representation, exploring “the space between the image, the object and the idea,” and inviting us to consider how we interpret two-dimensional accounts of a three-

dimensional world. In his paintings he refers to the celebrated Dutch artists associated with Leiden, including Vermeer, Ter Borch and Metsu. Bound to be a popular show.
