For some years now the lines between old folk, nu-folk, psych-folk and whatever the folk you’re into have blurred to the point where we’re no longer certain what qualifies as what. Taking their cues from people far older than themselves (Bert Jansch, Vashti Bunyan), Brighton- based Peggy Sue also reference the likes of PJ Harvey and, dare we say it, Grinderman. The result is dirty blues/folk music underpinned with a vocal sobriety and sweetness, which in turn is skewered by unsettling lyrics.

The core duo of Rosa Slade and Katy Young come across as feisty types who sing about being in love, love-hurt and lovesick, yet who have the knack of proclaiming such feelings with two singularly folk instruments: an acoustic guitar and an accordion. And a hey-nonny-ho to you, too!
