Whelan’s isn’t the only esteemed Irish venue celebrating its 20th birthday this year – The Stables in Mullingar, Co Westmeath is also planning a party to commemorate two decades in business.
Playing this Sunday, December 20th, will be “The Stables All-Stars”, a huge gathering of musicians who have graced the stage over the past two decades. Among them will be well-known acts such as Paddy Casey, as well as plenty of local heroes such as The Aftermath and Innate. The Blizzards, who began their career at the venue, are also rumoured to be dropping in to play one of their final gigs before taking a break.
Best of all, and in keeping with the spirit of 1989, entrance on the night is a mere 50c. Proceedings kick off at 6pm.
The Stables opened its doors in 1989 after founders Tommy and Miriam MacManus decided that the Midlands were in desperate need of a quality venue in order to entice Irish and international musicians alike beyond the Pale. Over the years it has hosted everyone from John Martyn to Duffy.
