Tanlines: Highly visible

The buzz has always been there

The buzz has always been there. Since 2008, Tanlines have been sneaking their euphoric Balearic pop on to an MP3 player near you.

A process that began with superbly realised remixes for Telepathe, El Guincho, Au Revoir Simone and Tough Alliance ( A New Chanceis their finest remix to date) has grown to become a catalogue worth crowing about. From the New Flowerssingle, which they did for Young Turks, to the recently released Settings EP for True Panther, Tanlines have slowly and surely made a mark.

Before Tanlines, Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm worked on separate musical projects around Brooklyn, the former with Professor Murder and the latter with production duo The Brothers and Don Caballero.

When they teamed up, the initial plan was for Tanlines to be another production project concentrating on remixes and utilising guest vocalists.

But one thing lead to another, live bookings flowed in, and Tanlines became a band where shiny, translucent grooves are always in the heart.

Their aim is to create pop music you can dance to. “I don’t think we’re trying to make dance music for a club. I think it’s more songs that you can also dance to, like Depeche Mode,” says Cohen. “I don’t think I have it in me to make anything dark.”

The SettingsEP is sure to increase interest in the duo. It sees them adding to their palette, with a string of rich, textured, tropical grooves now sharing space with the catchiest pop tunes you'll come across in an age.

Yes, it really does feel like the start of a brand new era.
