And still Madonna refuses to be ignored, despite a relatively unsuccessful new album, MDNA (which set an unwanted record when its second week sales in the US dropped by 90 per cent), and her rather boastful attitude to the significant ticket price for her shows. “Start saving your pennies now,” she told Newsweek at the launch of her world tour. “People spend $300 on crazy things all the time . . . So work all year, scrape the money together, and come to my show. I’m worth it.”
Judging by the responses to her tour so far, perhaps she is. Expect, then, a smattering of MDNA tracks amid some of her best-known songs. Expect, also, something of a live show spectacular that includes the following: an immense tri-part video screen, Jean Paul Gaultier costume designs, two dozen dancers (keep an eye out for her 11-year-old son, Rocco Ritchie), at least 10 musicians, catsuits, conical bras, couldn’t-give-a-toss approach, a hint of controversy, and the sense of über-dramatic reinvention that has kept Madonna in the public eye for more than 30 years.
