Festivals dominate this weekend, with the Beatyard and Static affairs accounting for most of the action in Dublin.
Beatyard is based in the Twisted Pepper and Bernard Shaw and has much to recommend, including Coronation Street/Red Dwarf star Craig Charles spinning funk and soul (Fri); the return of Matthew Herbert (pictured, Sat); a hometown soiree from Mike Slott (Sat); and dark, magical techno from Apparat (Sun). We also like the sound of 12 Sundays’ tribute to Prince.
The Static Weekender at the Button Factory has Mmoths (Sat), Jacques Greene with Ital and oOoOO (Sat), and Clark with Hype Williams and Awesome Tapes From Africa (Sun).
Down south, the Cork Jazz Festival is in full swing but there’s plenty in play for non-jazz fans, with Prince Fatty dubbing things up at the Pavilion (Sat), a chance to party like it’s 1929 at Prohibition (Sat), and Kerri Chandler playing his biggest Cork show to date (Sun).
Can't see that? Catch this:Resistance marks 10 years in business with a bumper night out (Sat, Waterford); the Shaft reunion recalls 21 years of underground parties (Sat, Dublin); and Shine celebrates its 17th birthday (Sat, Belfast)
