Lyla Foy: Mirrors the Sky

Artist: Lyla Foy
Genre: Alternative
Label: Sub Pop

Fusing ambient and rather foreboding found sounds (from a blustering storm in Cornwall to the jittery jangle of car keys) with soft folktronica and rudimentary digital treatments, Londoner Lyla Foy initially comes across as the wrong side of odd. Listen more attentively, however, and the ripple effect of weird for its own sake subsides into a languorous take on the kind of folk that informs the works of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan and Karen Dalton (whose Something on Your Mind Foy covered in a previous creative incarnation). Another major bonus is Foy's shimmering adoration of Kate Bush – Honeymoon, I Only, Impossible, Easy, Feather Tongue and Warning ooze the sort of romanticism that informs Bush's work. This noted, Foy's music is one of a kind. We'll know more about it when she performs at the Kilkenny Rhythm & Roots Festival in early May. lylafoy.com
