THERE ARE some times when less can be more. In the case of Julianna Barwick and her Florinemini-album from last year, it seems at first listen that the cupboard is truly bare.
But then those sounds hook you as Barwick’s ethereal loops, choir-like hums and atmospheric soundscapes combine to create a dream-like sort of ambient glue.
Along the way, the music created by the Louisiana-born, Brooklyn-based producer’s voice, piano and synths have gathered comparisons to Björk, Kate Bush, Yoko Ono, Panda Bear and (yikes) Enya.
Barwick has been perfecting that streamlined sound for a couple of years. Her previous release, Sanguine, caused vast swathes of music bloggers to swoon in unison.
"Singing without words is something I've always done," says Barwick. "I just kind of make up my own language. I remember doing that when I was a kid very clearly, even singing along to the Dallastheme tune in a made-up language. It's most comfortable for me to just sing whatever pops into my head, and concentrate most of all on the sound."
