BJÖRK
Moon
One Little Indian ***
The Icelander wears a bright red fright wig and strums a belt harp in outer space. Business as usual then.
THE ORIGINAL RUDEBOYS
Stars in My Eyes
Rubyworks **
These inner-city Dublin YouTube sensations have chosen one of the most misleading monikers since Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and The Violent Femmes. On the evidence of their debut single, they owe not the faintest debt to classic Jamaican ska or reggae, but rather rather to 1990s hip-hop and cutsey acoustic pop.
THE INTERNET
Love Song 1 ****
An impressive solo effort by Odd Future’s Syd Tha Kyd. She may or may not succeed in single-handedly reviving trip-hop as a genre with this track, but she has at least demonstrated enviable vocal chops and foisted upon the world an utterly un-Googleable new alias. youtube.com
BRIGHT EYES & FIRST AID KIT
We're Going to Be Friends
Manimal Vinyl **
Conor Oberst teams up with young Swedish folk duo Johanna and Klara Soderberg to cover this track from The White Stripes’ White Blood Cells album. Proceeds go towards the Lunchbox Fund, which provides meals for South African schools. Also, as this column has now exceeded its loveliness quotient for this week [not lovely enough to give a charity single more than two stars, though – Ed], I’m going outside now to kick several puppies.
RUBBERBANDITS
Spastic Hawk ***
If the Limerick duo's intention were to alienate the Horse Outside-loving masses, then they could hardly have used these four minutes to more devastating effect. Spastic Hawkis a gag-free paean to a special needs pet, where the only humour is derived from Blind Boy Boat Club's Mark E Smith-esque ability to insert yet another syllable into the word "hawk" every time he pronounces it. youtube.com
