When Paul Rose isn't running the canny Hotflush label (past home to Joy Orbison, James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Roska and Untold), he works the switches and machines as Scuba. As previous albums such as Triangulationshow, Rose is a dab hand at dark, moody, liquid thumpers and other shades of the post- dubstep landscape. On album No 3, he continues dubstep's covetous carry-on across house and techno's hinterlands with a collection of fascinating mongrel grooves that duck and dive all over the shop. Rose is a skilful manipulator, capable of providing both colourful, clamorous big-room thrills ( Julyis the go-to track in that regard and one of the album's highlights) and more introspective, unadorned, languid fare ( Cognitive Dissonance).
