Ronnie Lynn Patterson

Music Out Note ****

A drummer seduced by Jarrett, Tyner and Corea, Ronnie Lynn Patterson switched to piano and has built a big reputation in France over the past decade. This fine trio CD with the Moutins, François (bass) and Louis (drums), suggests that Patterson's reputation is deserved. The choice of repertoire reflects his early mentors: Tyner recorded Coltrane's Lazy Bird, Jarrett's trio Moon and Sand, and Corea did Ornette's Blues Connotation. Patterson makes them his own, forging an ebulliently inventive solo from the angularities of Ornette's piece and finding ways of sustained motivic engagement in Lazy Birdand a lovely Moon and Sand, where he also evokes Bill Evans. And Evans is surely part of his language in the absorbing transformations of the best performances here ( Blue in Greenand All Blues) as much as the Evans ensemble approach is behind the absorbing interaction of this exceptional trio.
