Look Out Mama

Alynda Lee Segarra is an interesting young woman. Some years ago, at 17, she left her New York Bronx home to ride the rails across America "til the life got heavy and the times got hard", as she relates in the fetching Ramblin' Girl. She eventually landed up in New Orleans where, in the late noughties, under the flag of Hurray For the Riff Raff, she and her three comrades self-released a brace of albums. Noted British independent label, Loose, pulled together the best of the tracks into a well received package last year. The lo-fi sound of Look Out Mama reflects her travels – a little country, a little southern soul, a little retro-pop and a lot of folk – and while her songs are good, not least Ode to John and Yoko, Born to Win and the title track, her fresh, knowing voice accentuates their charm. hurrayfortheriffraff.com
