A Sufi and a Killer,Warp, ****

It will suck you in, this truly out-there, unique, psychedelic slice of Mojave desert blues containing the weird and warped visions of Las Vegas yoga teacher Sumach Ecks. He’s been making hip-hop cuts since the early 1990s, but it was his turn on Flying Lotus’s Los Angeles album that initially turned heads. You’ll find FlyLo in the production gallery here, where he’s throwing down sinister, smokey beats alongside The Gaslamp Killer and Mainframe. Aside from those twisted, fuzzy, trippy beats (the trio are in tip-top form, with FlyLo hitting the jackpot on the jazzed-out Ancestors), Ecks’ vocals, all hobo croaks and growls, is also a reason to get hip to A Sufi and a Killer. He really sounds as he’s already experienced a century of trouble and strife as his raspy, unmistakable tones go to work describing what he sees in the shadows and depths.
