5ive Horns RhythmEnja ****
The great veteran trumpeter and flügelhornist Dusko Goykovich has carved a singular niche in jazz, flavoured by bop, Miles Davis, his Balkan roots, a natural affinity for Brazilian music and boundless melodic facility.
He's well served on this beautifully crafted date, which revisits some of his insinuatingly attractive originals and old favourites like Sam Jones's blues-with-a-bridge,
Unit Seven, and Jay McShann's funky
Back At The Chicken Shack.Goykovich's arrangements for two trumpets, trombone, tenor, baritone and rhythm, get a huge ensemble sound, a considerable range of voicings and a vibrant, ebullient, swinging feel from the octet. He solos with typical distinction throughout, notably on
Ballad For Milesand a lyrical Quo Vadis Samba, and there is also fine work from Fulvio Albano (tenor), Adrian Mears (trombone) and Walter Lang (piano).
