Camp Glassnote****
Donald Glover does not appear to be one for hanging around doing nothing. Productive as an actor ( Community), screenwriter ( 30 Rock)and stand-up comic, Glover's rap moves as Childish Gambino have led to a clutch of vivid, smart albums and mix-tapes. For Camp, Glover kicks back on the theme of not fitting in and the problem of being neither one thing (suburban indie kid) nor the other (hip-hop wiseguy), with great lines all the way, like the observation in Fire Flyof being the only black kid at a Sufjan Stevens gig. With longtime production foil Ludwig Goransson slinging electronica and soul backdrops, Glover is at his best when he lets his fierce, funny and articulate flow do the hard digging about race, society, comedy, authenticity and the problems of being an actor who wants to be taken seriously as a rapper. As hip-hop belly-fluff examination goes, you won't find better this year. See iamdonald. com
