The Very Lotust 1922s**

This Louth band used be known as Evil Harrisons, who featured in The Ticket’s Top 50 Irish Rock Acts of Right Now list a year or two ago. And then? Well, clearly the band experienced a distinct and strategic change of plan. So far, so good; such an approach is never a bad thing, yet with this, their debut album, it would surely have helped 1922s if they hadn’t been caught – red-handed it must be said – raiding commercial-era Microdisney’s cookie jar. It’s all decent enough; some tracks sound like spritely left-of-centre show tunes, as if Stephen Sondheim was willingly handcuffed to Gavin Friday. But most of what’s on offer here suffers hugely from the type of creative osmosis that should have been clocked from the very start. That’s a pity, because there are some neat notions rolling around here. See the1922s.com
