WHYTE'S of Marlborough Street, Dublin, sold four airmail stamps over- printed "Specimen" and dating from 1948-54 for £1,300 at the auction house's recent sale of stamps and postal history material. A block of four ten shillings "Saorstat Eireann" composite mint stamps also fetched £1,300, while a 1935 two-pence green definitive coil stamp went for £950.
An 1870 half-penny postcard used on the first day of issue made £900, a 1916 "Erie Puist" (sic) sheet of eight propaganda labels showing Easter Rising leaders and issued by Sinn Fein sympathisers in the United States sold for £750, and a 1929 Catholic Emancipation Centenary set of three commemorative stamps of a first-day cover fetched £600. A 1954 envelope for Ecuador, recovered from the wreck of a KLM aeroplane which crashed at Shannon, sold for £320 and a 1960 envelope for the US, recovered from the wreck of an Alitalia flight which crashed at Shannon, made £260.
