James Adam sale offers some fine silver lots
Approximately 50 per cent of the lots at next Wednesday's auction in the James Adam salerooms comprises silver and plate, much of it of Irish origin. Not everything on offer is of equal merit, of course, but there are fine examples of silversmiths' work from the 18th to the present century.
Representative of the latter, for example, are two arts and crafts two-handled punch bowls in the form of the Ardagh chalice. One of these comes from West & Sons and is dated 1901 (estimate £3,000-£5,000), while the other from Weir and Sons is a little later in date (£1,200-£1,800). Early 19th-century Irish silver also features heavily, such as a pair of George IV circular salvers from the hand of James le Bas of Dublin (£4,000-£6,000) and a William IV baluster-shaped coffee pot (£800-£1,200). A handsome George III hot water jug is also Irish, made by John Locker of Dublin (£3,500-£4,000), as is the somewhat later arts and crafts three-piece tea service by Edmond Johnson of Dublin (£850-£950).
Other Irish silver lots in this sale include a George III taper hook-back soup ladle by Michael Keating of Dublin (£800-£1,200), a Regency entree dish, cover and handle by Richard Sawyer of Dublin (£800-£1,000), and a George III matched three-piece tea service by William Nolan of Dublin (£1,000-£1,200).

This is one of some 700 lots in the sale, which also features a mahogany extending dining table - always popular with buyers - estimated to make £3,500-£4,500, and a walnut bureau bookcase (£2,500-£3,500).
