The programme for this year’s Sundance Film Festival, which takes place next month in deepest Utah, was announced earlier in the week, includes such intriguing notions as Daniel Radcliffe playing (no, really) Allen Ginsberg. The former wizard turns up as the poet in Kill Your Darlings, a study of traumatic incidents in the early career of the future Beats writers.
Jack Huston, grandson of John, turns up as the young Jack Kerouac. Lana Wilson’s documentary After Tiller, examines the murder of George Tiller, a US doctor who practised late-term abortions. Citizen Koch deals with the vexed issue of political funding in the USA. More than half the dramatic features are directed by women. Among them is Francesca Gregorini’s intriguing Emanuel and the truth about Fishes, which stars Jessica Biel as a woman mistaken for the late mother of a neighbour. Irish interest comes with a nod for Nick Ryan’s documentary The Summit, aboutLimerick climber Ger McDonnell’s efforts to ascend the notoriously perilous K2. The festival closes with jOBS, the biopic of Steve Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher.
