A MAN at the centre of a failed attempt to extradite him to Britain was further remanded on an IRA membership charge in Dublin yesterday. Mr Anthony Duncan (26), unemployed, from Kippure Park in Finglas, appeared amid tight security at a sitting of the Dublin District Court in Green Street.
He is charged with IRA membership on April 12th. His solicitor, Mr Michael Farrell, applied for a remand until June 24th for the hearing of depositions. The Assistant State Solicitor, Mr Brendan Counihan, said there would be 25 witnesses, and the taking of depositions would probably take more than a day.
Judge William Early remanded Mr Duncan in custody until June 24th. He was arrested in April and brought to the Dublin District Court on extradition warrants from the British authorities.
But the application failed after the State admitted that the documentation was "fundamentally flawed" and Mr Duncan was freed before his rearrest on the IRA membership charge. The Garda admitted later the fault lay with it and the original extradition warrant had probably been mistakenly shredded.
