A mid Victorian mahogany bookcase, with moulded cornice above three arched glazed doors, fetched the top price of £1,900 ate an auction held by Thomas P. Adams of Blackrock, Dublin, last Tuesday.
A 19th century French walnut console table, its rectangular, black marble top supported by winged figures in the Egyptian style, sold for £1,850. A pair of mid 19th century gilt convex mirrors surmounted by winged eagles and flanking scrolls made £1,600 and a set of six Victorian mahogany spoon back dining chairs realised £1,175.
As expected, the Hicks furniture included in Herman & Wilkinson's most recent auction achieved considerably higher prices than when these pieces had first been purchased more than 40 years ago.
A Sheraton style serving table which cost £30 in 1953, for example, sold for £2,800. Other good prices for Hicks furniture included £1,700 for a mahogany and satinwood tallboy chest on bracket feet and £1,400 for a mahogany and satinwood hall table. The latter figure was also achieved for a set of 10 Chinese carved hardwood dining chairs, while a Victorian, inlaid walnut small credenza went for £1,900.
