Before The Flying Nunpropelled Sally Field to TV stardom, there was the Belgian one-hit-wonder known as the Singing Nun, who topped the US singles charts in 1964 with the chirpy Dominique. Also known as Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile), she was portrayed by Debbie Reynolds in the bland, fictionalised 1966 movie The Singing Nun, which featured nine of her songs.
Now the nun is the subject of a new biopic, Soeur Sourire, which stars Cécile de France and is on release in Belgium, where it was made. It is said to be much closer to the truth of her story. After leaving the convent, she became involved in a lesbian relationship. Soeur Sourire and her lover died by suicide in 1985.
