The World Bank announced yesterday that in response to the Asian crisis its loans in the 1997-1998 fiscal year came to a record $28.6 billion (£19.2 billion), a 39 per cent increase over the previous period.

In its annual report, the Bank said its loans were earmarked for 115 projects in 43 countries. The IDA financed 67 new projects in 19 countries.
