WALL Street stocks retreated yesterday, led again by battered technology shares, as confidence levels remained shaken in the aftermath of last week's intense sell off.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 35.88 to close at 5390.94.

Declining issues outnumbered advances by an 11-to-four margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 651 up, 1770 down and 736 unchanged.

NYSE volume totalled 327.26 million shares, against 402.25 million in the previous session.

Among the battered technology stocks was Sun Microsystems, which slid on Friday when its earnings only barely exceeded forecasts.It fell again on the Nasdaq. Intel retreated also.

Few developments arose to motivate buyers, leaving the negative tone of Friday's decline and yesterday's ensuing losses on overseas markets as a leading influence, analysts said.
