DUNNES Stores has further strengthened its senior management with the appointment of Mr Andrew Street to the board of the company.
The appointment of Mr Street, who has responsibility for information systems and logistics, follows closely on the appointment in May of former Quinnsworth chief executive, Mr Dick Reeves, as director of Dunnes's food operations.
Among the major multiples, Dunnes is generally perceived as the company which has spent least on information systems and modern point of sale retailing technology, and is only now installing scanning technology in its stores.
Informed sources have suggested that Dunnes needs to make a major investment in its point of sale and information technology to bring it into line with the technology used by its competitors. A major investment in technology is likely to follow Mr Street's appointment to the board.
Mr Street joins Dunnes from Boots in Britain, where he was director of information systems since 1989. Boots operates 1,200 stores in Britain and is seen as being at the leading edge in the application of systems and technology to its business.
