The University of Ulster hopes to attract millions of pounds of new development investment to Northern Ireland after achieving some of the highest ratings in a new study of third level research in the UK.

The University of Ulster and Queen's University were both awarded five-star ratings in the latest UK Research Assessment Exercise.

The ratings achieved are used by UK funding bodies as guidelines for the distribution of public funds for research. Institutions conducting the best research receive a larger proportion of available grants.
