Jefferson Smurfit is set to announce a major expansion of one of its Northern Ireland subsidiaries. The £7.5 million investment is taking place in Smurfit TP, a carton manufacturing business in Belfast. The investment is expected to safeguard the existing 125 jobs and add around another dozen in the next couple of years. The investment involves installing a new state-of-the art printing press.

The Northern Ireland company currently carries out contracts for leading companies such as cigarette manufacturers Gallaher Wilkinson Sword and Oral B.

The investment, which is supported by the Industrial Development Board, is expected to increase the company's turnover by around 50 per cent before the end of the decade.

A spokesperson for Smurfit declined to comment last night, saying a statement on the matter will be made today.
