SmartForce, the e-learning group, has recorded strong growth with a 27 per cent rise in revenue to $57.7 million (€62 million) between the third and fourth quarters of 2000, exceeding analysts forecasts by $4.6 million. The shares responded enthusiastically with a 14 per cent gain on Nasdaq to $41.621 /2 before closing at $40.06 1/4, up 10.3 per cent.

The company has also raised its revenue and earnings targets. Net income (before amortisation) per share amounted to $0.01. On a reported basis, the net loss per share amounted to $0.03.

"The strong performance for the fourth quarter allowed the company to reach profitability a quarter ahead of its original plans," the company said.
