THE introduction of a statutory minimum wage would be bad for business and bad for the unemployed, according to the Small Firms Association. Describing calls for a statutory minimum wage as "vote grabbing", SFA director Mr Brendan Butler said it would result in employers shelving expansion plans.

Smaller firms would be the worst affected, he said. He called on political parties to tackle the issue of low pay by reforming the PAYE and PRSI systems.
