Red Hot FM triumphs in bid for Cork radio licence

Red Hot FM, the consortium comprising Irish Examiner publisher Thomas Crosbie Holdings and 13 business people, has secured a licence to broadcast radio in Cork. The group triumphed over two rival bidders to win approval from the Independent Radio and Television Commission (IRTC). The station, whose backers include Mr Ulick McEvaddy and Mr Vivian F Nathan, is expected to begin broadcasts in September or October.

The IRTC's chief executive, Mr Michael O'Keeffe, said he hoped the decision would not be challenged in the courts.

The IRTC would inform all bidding parties of the thinking behind its decision, he said.

Its award of a licence to Dublin station Spin FM was upheld by the Supreme Court last month after a rival bidder mounted a challenge.

It is thought the IRTC chose Red Hot because it aims to attract a younger audience than the existing radio services in Cork. It is understood the commission thought the station would do more to enhance the diversity of radio in Cork.

Of the rival bids, one made by Magic FM was considered the stronger. Its backers include a businessman, Mr Gerry Murphy, in addition to Radio Kerry and Lite FM, the Dublin station.

A bid by Beat FM, whose shareholders included Manchester United footballers Roy Keane and Denis Irwin, was considered less serious. Its principal shareholder was Today FM.

The IRTC's chairman Mr Conor Maguire, SC, said yesterday's decision was taken after consideration of a formal written application and an oral presentation, after which further data were sought by the commission.
