That well-known cookery couple Jeanne and Paul Rankin launched a new hamper company this week, under the Gourmet Ireland name. In Dublin for the launch the low-key Paul gave a short speech explaining the concept behind it.

The Belfast-born chef said that although the corporate market was important, he hoped that people might send them abroad as presents, for relatives - say "Uncle Billy." Oh no! he exclaimed "that's Belfast - I mean, Uncle Seamus."

The hampers, which contain only Irish-sourced goods (except for the wine), feature a 60 per cent Republic and 40 per cent Northern-Ireland made mix, said Rankin. "So we're fairly politically correct!"

Meanwhile, another couple were also on hand for the launch - Michelle de Bruin and her husband Erik. The launch promoters said it was decided to invite a few celebrities. They said they had asked Bono as well - he sometimes eats in Roscoff's, the Rankin's restaurant in Belfast - but he didn't turn up.
