Profits at EMC rise 20%

Data storage company EMC has reported almost a 20 per cent jump in profits for the second-quarter to the end of June

Data storage company EMC has reported almost a 20 per cent jump in profits for the second-quarter to the end of June. The company had net income of $334.4 million compared to $279.1 million a year ago. EMC had revenues of $3.12 billion driven by what it said was "double-digit growth" in its systems, software and services businesses in all markets in which it operates.

The company said it expected total revenues for the year to exceed the guidance of $12.7 billion it gave earlier in the year.

EMC employs more than 1,500 people in Dublin and Cork. The facility in Cork now supplies all its non-US markets.

Colm O'Neill, managing director of EMC Ireland, said the fact that the international business was growing faster than its US business was an endorsement of its Cork operations.

North American revenues grew 20 per cent on an annual basis, while non-US revenues grew 23 per cent.

EMC has made a number of acquisitions to expand the portfolio of software it offers customers. In February its VMware subsidiary announced plans to create 350 technical support and back-office jobs in Cork.

Mr O'Neill said EMC had outgrown its original site in Ovens, Co Cork, and "pure manufacturing is no longer the lion's share of what we do at our sites in Ballincollig and Ovens".
