Customers pay direct account related costs, including a maintenance fee (£4.15 per quarter) and additional charges for electronic and paper transactions. Those who maintain a balance of £100 escape those charges. Service charges are levied for a whole range of transactions - for example £2.70 to set up a direct debit or standing order, while there are annual charges for chequer and eurocheque cards. There are also a range of unauthorised lending charges and Government duties on cheque books (£1.75 per annum) and ATM cards (£5 per annum)
