IF YOU find yourself doing a spot of late-night shopping in Tesco in the near future don’t be surprised if you bump into Ireland, Leinster and Lions rugby star Brian O’Driscoll.
In a TV interview with the BBC this week in Britain to promote the Lions tour, Drico casually revealed his preference for the British supermarket giant, but only after being thrown a hospital pass by the Beeb’s female questioner.
“What’s it like being BOD [Brian O’Driscoll] in Ireland at the moment since you won the Grand Slam? Can you go out to Sainsbury’s without being mobbed?” she asked politely.
She was either blissfully unaware that Sainsbury’s hasn’t yet ventured south of the Border or she’d had a tip-off that Drico and his fiancée Amy Huberman have joined the unpatriotic hordes heading North for cut-price groceries and hair gel.
“Em, I’m a Tesco man myself but it’s late-night shopping usually,” Drico responded with a smile.
Maybe Drico’s been lured to Tesco by its recent price cuts. Or maybe its Amy Huberman’s influence. Whatever the reason, it was a nice PR boost for Tesco, which has been getting it in the neck from Irish farmers and suppliers.
As the retailer itself might say, every little helps.
