Indian economist Mr Amartya Sen, who yesterday was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics, said he hoped the award would highlight the importance of research into poverty alleviation.

Dr Sen (64), won the 1998 prize for his contribution to welfare economics, and in particular his research into the causes of famine and poverty.

His work challenged the common view that a shortage of food is the most important explanation of famine.
