The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has entered into an agreement which allows the US firm Aeronautical Radio Incorporated (ARINC) to use its facilities for transmitting data to aircraft in Irish airspace, the IAA said yesterday.

The facilities will be used for VHF data transmission and will form part of ARINC's worldwide aircraft communications system. While the system will primarily be used for airline company communications, the deal will allow the IAA to improve its service to customers. Messages such as pre-departure clearances and airport terminal information services - which at present have to be transmitted by voice - could be sent more efficiently by computer data link, the IAA said.
