The besieged Napster music-swapping site filed an emergency appeal yesterday to get permission to resume operations two days after a federal judge ordered the site to remain closed. The Californian internet firm was ordered on Wednesday to remain offline by a US District Court judge.

The website had been closed since July 2nd, initially to implement filtering software that would screen out copyrighted music. It was to reopen this week, and told the judge it could keep 99 per cent of the copyrighted songs off the system. But the judge refused to let business resume. Napster is being sued by the world's leading recording firms for allowing users to engage in widespread copyright infringement.
