Computer giant Microsoft was cleared last night of charges it violated state and federal antitrust laws as had been alleged in a case brought by Bristol Technologies.

Bristol had accused Microsoft of anti-competitive behaviour.

But the Connecticut jury did award Bristol nominal damages of one dollar after finding that Microsoft violated the state's Unfair Trade Practices Act.

After the verdict Microsoft shares were up by $5.31 1/4 at $99.68 3/4 against a moderately higher overall market.

Dealers said the stock was earlier supported by reports it could issue a tracking stock for its internet properties.

In addition to the antitrust lawsuit brought by the Department of Justice and 19 state attorneys-general, Microsoft also faces an antitrust jury trial against Caldera Incorporated scheduled to start in June.
